I hope some of this may help :

Background .more of a grunge help.

- Its always nice to have a nice background to go with a sig, but the touch it not to over do it with the brushing but still let the effect be there in the sig. Some sigs do require a lot of brushing for the effect but look at your render and see is it an action picture, does it need alot of movement and should it be more hidden and 'mystical'. If you get the balance right for your sig then your sure to get there.

Render

- A few easy steps to making sure you don't over do the render are :

1) Make sure you don't brush too mush over the render, its there too be seen and should act as a focal point for your sig and will be the first thing the user catches his/her eye on and will notice this

2) Don't just plant your render straight over the top of your background and keep it from having any defined lines that don't blend in with your background

3) An easy way to start off blending your render is this :

Duplicate your render layer
Move the duplicated layer under your render
Filter -> Blur -> Motion Blur (Angle: 0 | Distance: 80)
Now set that layer to overlay.

Text

1) Make sure you pic the right text for your sig, if you doing an abstract one then you are looking for a more plain type font and for grunge it can have more things happening too it. (This all needs to go with your background)

2) Text overlapping with your render is not usually a good idea, it usually only works if you are going for the engraved look or if its an explosion on the render and will look like its going with the motion of the explosion

3) You don't want too have a massive text on your sig, this will bring the user away from the rest of the sig with the render and onto your text and name

Secondary Text

1) This is always small and usually in a pixel font with a small quote or website, it doesnt need too be shown as much as the main text as it is the secondary text.

Border

1) The easiest way too get a border that doesnt stand out is:

Once you have saved your .psd file flatten the image (Ctrl + Shift + E)
Duplicate that layer
Put a 1px black/white stroke over the top with it set too 'Inside' and then the blending too Overlay

The border has too go with the rest of the sig, make sure you choose the right one for the style you chose.

- - - - -

I hope some of that helps someone out and I had too type the whole thing so don't go telling me of any spelling mistakes becuase they're are bound to be a few.
